Places to Visit in Kashmir: A Traveller’s Guide to the 10 Best Spots

The first morning in Srinagar, I woke up at 5:30 without an alarm. The window was open, and the air was so cold and clean that I could smell the lake before I saw it. A shikara was already moving on Dal Lake, and the mountains behind it were turning pink. I had a cup of kahwa in my hand and just stood there for ten minutes, without clicking a single photo. If you’re planning a trip to Kashmir, this guide covers 10 places, along with distances, travel times, and things to do at each destination.

That was the moment I understood why people visit Kashmir once and then keep coming back.

But Kashmir is big, and planning a first trip can get confusing. If you are exploring Kashmir tour packages or planning the journey on your own, it helps to know which places to visit first, how far they are from Srinagar, and how much time each journey takes. This guide covers 10 places, along with distances, travel times, and things to do at each destination.

1. Srinagar

Srinagar

Start here. Most trips begin and end in Srinagar, so keep a day or two for it.

Take a shikara ride on Dal Lake, once in the morning and once at sunset. They feel like two different places. Then visit the Mughal gardens, Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi, and go up to Shankaracharya Temple for a full view of the city and the lake. Walk through the old city too, and eat in a small local shop at least once.

Tip: Bargain while shopping, and leave early in the morning to avoid crowds.
Best time: December to February for snow, April for the tulip garden.

2. Gulmarg

Gulmarg

Gulmarg is 49 km from Srinagar, about 2 hours by road. In winter the whole town turns white and the slopes fill with skiers. In summer the same slopes turn into green meadows with flowers.

The big attraction is the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world. You can also try an ATV ride or play in the snow.

Tip: Book Gondola tickets about 15 days before your trip. On busy days, they sell out. Also, always fix the price before starting any activity.
Best time: December to February.

3. Pahalgam

Pahalgam

Pahalgam sits by the Lidder River, about 90 km from Srinagar (around 2 hours). The sound of the river stays with you the whole time you are there.

Visit Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. You can go for a pony ride, try river rafting, or camp at Aru. It is also the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra, so it gets crowded in that season.

Tip: Local sightseeing here is done by the union cab, so plan for that in your budget.
Best time: June to August.

4. Sonmarg

Sonamarg

Sonmarg means “meadow of gold,” and in spring the grass does look golden in the morning light. It is about 80 km from Srinagar, roughly 2 hours.

The main trip here is to Thajiwas Glacier. Most people take a pony, and some walk. You can also go to Zojila, Baltal and Zero Point, or try rafting. Sonmarg is also the starting point for the Great Lakes Trek.

Best time: April to June.

5. Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley

Gurez is the place I tell people about when they say they have “already seen Kashmir.” It is 123 km from Srinagar and takes about 4 hours. The road is long, but the valley at the end is calm, green and almost empty.

You will see Habba Khatoon Peak and the Kishanganga river. Camp by the water and trek if you have energy.

Tip: You will pass 3 checkpoints on the way, so keep your ID with you.
Best time: June to August.

6. Yousmarg

Yusmarg

If you want an easy day trip, this is it. Yousmarg is 53 km from Srinagar, about 1.5 hours. It is full of pine trees and open grass, with the Doodhganga river running through. Walk to the river in about 15 minutes, or take a pony.

Tip: Carry waterproof shoes. The ground gets muddy after rain.
Best time: June to August.

7. Keran Valley

Keran is about 145 km from Srinagar (4 hours). The river here is the border, and you can see houses on the other side. It is a quiet, strange and memorable place.

Stay in a tent, look at the stars at night, and walk to Cobra Point.

Tip: You need an e-permission and must pass 7 checkpoints. Sort the permit before you leave.
Best time: June to August.

8. Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri

Only 44 km from Srinagar and about 2 hours away, Doodhpathri is a wide meadow with a stream running through it. It is a good place to sit down, take pictures and do nothing. Pony rides, camping and short treks are available.

Best time: June to August.

9. Bangus Valley

Bangus is in Kupwara district, about 100 km from Srinagar (3.5 hours). The road is average, but the meadow at 10,000 feet makes up for it. The grass is thick and soft, and people jump on it like a trampoline. Camp here or trek around.

Best time: August to October.

10. Sinthan Top

Sinthan Top is at 12,440 feet and about 130 km from Srinagar, roughly 3 hours. It is less crowded than Gulmarg, and in winter you can try skiing, a sledge ride or a snowmobile.

Best time: April to June for snow activities.

Which Season Should You Pick?

  • Spring (April to June): Tulips, Sonmarg and Sinthan Top
  • Summer (June to August): Pahalgam, Gurez, Keran, Yousmarg, Doodhpathri
  • Autumn (September to October): Red and gold trees, fewer people
  • Winter (December to February): Snow in Gulmarg and a quiet Dal Lake

A Few Things I Wish I Knew Earlier

  1. Start your day early. Roads are empty and light is soft in the morning.
  2. Give every far place a full day. Gurez, Keran and Bangus are 3.5 to 4 hours one way.
  3. Carry warm clothes, even in summer. Evenings get cold.
  4. Keep cash with you. Many small places do not take cards, and the network can be weak in the valleys.
  5. Book Gondola tickets and permits early.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Use this Kashmir Travel Guide to plan your trip based on the time you have.

  • 4 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam
  • 6 days: Add Sonmarg and Yousmarg
  • 8 to 10 days: Add Gurez, Keran or Bangus, and go slowly

Conclusion

Kashmir is not a trip where you tick off places and run. The best moments are small: a hot cup of kahwa in the cold air, a pony walking through wet grass, or a quiet evening on the lake. If you are planning a longer journey, a Kashmir Backpacking Trip from Delhi can be a good way to explore the region at a comfortable pace. Pick two or three places, give them time, and you will see what I mean.

FAQs:

1. Which is the most beautiful place in Kashmir?

It depends on what you like. Gulmarg is best for snow and meadows, Pahalgam for rivers and valleys, and Srinagar for Dal Lake and gardens. If you want something quiet, Gurez Valley is hard to beat.

2. Which is the most visited place in Kashmir?

Srinagar is the most visited, mainly for Dal Lake, shikara rides and the Mughal gardens. Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg come right after it.

3. Which month is best to visit Kashmir?

For snow, go from December to February. For tulips and spring weather, April is great. For green meadows and open roads to valleys like Gurez and Keran, June to August works best. September and October are good for fall colours and fewer crowds.

4. How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Four days cover Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Six days let you add Sonmarg and Yousmarg. If you also want Gurez, Keran or Bangus Valley, plan 8 to 10 days.

5. Is Pahalgam better or Gulmarg?

Both are different. Gulmarg is better for snow, skiing and the Gondola. Pahalgam is better for river views, valleys and a calm, green feel. If you have time, visit both.

6. Is 2 days enough for Kashmir?

Two days is very short. You can see Srinagar and one day trip, like Gulmarg, but you will feel rushed. At least 4 days is a better plan.

7. Which places in Kashmir are less crowded?

Gurez Valley, Keran Valley, Bangus Valley, Doodhpathri and Yousmarg are quieter than the main towns. Just remember that Gurez and Keran need checkpoints, and Keran needs an e-permission.

8. Which places in Kashmir are good in winter?

Gulmarg and Sinthan Top for snow activities, and Srinagar for a quiet, cold Dal Lake. Pahalgam and Sonmarg also look beautiful in snow, but check road conditions before you go.

9. Do I need to book Gulmarg Gondola tickets in advance?

Yes. It is better to book about 15 days before your trip, because tickets can sell out on busy days.

10. Is Kashmir good for families and couples?

Yes. Families enjoy houseboat stays, Mughal gardens and easy day trips like Yousmarg and Doodhpathri. Couples usually love shikara rides at sunset, Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
