Best Time to Visit Kashmir: Which Month Is Right for You?

I have heard this question more than any other: “When should I go to Kashmir?” And every time, the honest answer is the same. It depends on what you want to see.

I once went in April and walked through a garden full of tulips. A friend went in December and called it the quietest place he had ever stood in, white snow everywhere and not a sound. Another went in October and spent three days just looking at red chinar trees. All three said Kashmir was the best trip of their life. Same place, three completely different trips.

So there is no single best month. But there is a best month for you. This guide will help you find it. Once you pick your month, our Complete Kashmir travel guide covers routes, stays and trip planning in detail.

If you already know your dates and just want a trip that is planned around them, take a look at our Kashmir tour packages. Hotels, cabs and sightseeing are set for each season.

The Short Answer

  • March to May: Flowers, gardens and mild weather
  • June to August: Green valleys, warm days, all roads open
  • September to November: Golden leaves and fewer people
  • December to February: Snow, skiing and silence

If this is your first trip and you want everything open and the weather easy, go in April or May. If you want snow, go in January or February. If you want fall colours, go in October.

Spring (March to May)

Kashmir in March

Spring is when the valley wakes up. The snow melts in the low areas, the gardens open, and everything turns green again. Srinagar stays around 8°C to 25°C, which is very comfortable for walking and sightseeing.

The big attraction is the Tulip Garden in Srinagar, one of the top  Iconic places to visit in Kashmir in spring. It is the largest in Asia, sits near the Zabarwan hills and looks over Dal Lake.

A tip from my side: Go to the garden in the first hour after it opens. The light is soft, the flowers look fresh, and the tour buses have not arrived yet. By late morning it gets crowded.

Do not plan a tulip trip for May. By then, most of the bloom is over.

Who should go: First-timers, couples, photographers and families.
The downside: It is a popular season, so hotels and houseboats fill up early. Book at least a few weeks ahead.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the easiest time to travel in Kashmir. Srinagar goes from about 15°C to 30°C, so yes, the afternoons can actually feel warm. Many people are surprised by this. They pack only heavy woollens and then sweat in the sun.

All the major places are open in these months: Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and even far valleys like Gurez and Bangus. You can see the full list in our guide to the best places to visit in Kashmir.

This is also the busiest season, because of school holidays. Prices are higher and the popular spots get crowded.

If you plan to travel in July and August, keep an eye on the Amarnath Yatra dates. During the Yatra, there is more traffic around Pahalgam and Baltal, and some rules change. It does not mean you cannot travel, but you should keep extra time in your plan and keep your itinerary flexible.

Who should go: Families, school-holiday travellers, and anyone who wants easy roads.
The downside: Crowds and higher prices.

Autumn (September to November)

This is the season I would pick if I could choose only one. In September, the valley is still green, the weather is pleasant at around 13°C to 27°C, and the summer crowd has gone. In October, the chinar trees turn deep red and gold, and the whole city looks different. By November, it gets cold and quiet.

October is the best month for photos. Walk around the Mughal gardens or the old parts of Srinagar and you will see leaves on the ground and light coming through red trees. It is hard to explain, you just have to see it.

November is lovely if you want silence, but be honest with yourself. The green is gone, and the valley is slowly getting ready for winter.

Who should go: Couples, photographers, and people who hate crowds.
The downside: Evenings are cold, and November can feel dull if you want greenery.

Winter (December to February)

Kashmir in January

Winter changes Kashmir completely. Srinagar goes down to around -8°C at night and rarely goes above 10°C in the day. Gulmarg and Pahalgam are even colder. This is the time for snow, skiing, snowboarding and a very quiet Dal Lake.

If you want real snow, go up to Gulmarg or the higher parts of Pahalgam. Srinagar city does get snow, but it often turns to slush.

A few things to know about winter:

  • Snow is wonderful but you cannot predict it. Some days roads close, and flights can get delayed.
  • Keep at least one extra day in your plan.
  • The Gulmarg Gondola was suspended in 2026 after a technical problem, so do not plan your whole snow day around it. Check the latest status on the official cable car website before you book anything.
  • Late December has the New Year rush. If you want snow without the crowd, February is a smarter month.

Who should go: Snow lovers, honeymoon couples and people who like quiet.
The downside: Cold, and plans can change at short notice.

Month-by-Month at a Glance

January: Deep winter. Srinagar is about -2°C to 7°C. Best for snow and winter photos.

February: Still cold but less crowded. Good snow in Gulmarg without the New Year rush.

March: Tulip Garden opens mid-month. Gardens are in bloom below, and snow stays on the peaks above.

April: One of the best months for a first trip. About 8°C to 20°C. Tulips in full bloom and everything is open.

May: Warm and green, about 11°C to 25°C. Popular with families, so book early.

June: Warmer days, about 15°C to 28°C. Good for school holidays.

July: The warmest month in Srinagar, up to 30°C. Lush and green, but Yatra traffic around Pahalgam.

August: Warm and very green. Same Yatra considerations until it ends.

September: Pleasant, fewer people, still green. Underrated.

October: Chinar colours at their best. The month for photos.

November: Cold, quiet and cheaper. Not green anymore.

December: Snow comes back, and New Year crowds arrive.

Which Month for Which Traveller?

  • First-timers: April or May. The weather is easy and everything is open.
  • Families with kids: May or June. Comfortable days and school holidays.
  • Honeymoon couples: April for tulips, October for golden leaves, or January for snow.
  • Snow lovers: January or February.
  • Photographers: April for flowers, October for autumn.
  • Budget travellers: September, November, or late winter. Hotels cost less.
  • Senior travellers: May or September. No extreme heat or cold.
  • People who hate crowds: September, November or February.

Best Place in Each Season

Srinagar: Good in spring, summer and autumn. Dal Lake, the gardens and the old city are comfortable in all three.

Gulmarg: Best for snow in winter, and for open green meadows from late spring to summer.

Pahalgam: Best from April to June and again in September and October. Cooler than Srinagar in every season.

Sonamarg: Classic from May to October. Winter access has become better after the new tunnel, but weather still decides your day.

Gurez, Keran and Bangus: Go from June to September, when the roads are open and the weather is kind. You may need a permit for some of these areas.

What to Pack

  • Spring: Light woollens, walking shoes, sunscreen. Mornings are cool.
  • Summer: Cotton clothes, a hat, sunglasses, and a light jacket for evenings. A small raincoat helps too.
  • Autumn: Medium woollens and a warm jacket. Evenings get cold fast.
  • Winter: Heavy jacket, thermals, gloves, cap and waterproof boots. Do not cut corners here, the cold up in the mountains is serious.

Keep in mind that Gulmarg and Pahalgam are always colder than Srinagar. Carry one extra layer when you go up, even in summer.

Things to Check Before You Book

  1. Gondola status. Look at the official cable car website before you plan Gulmarg around it. Never buy tickets from random agents.
  2. Flights. Runway work at Srinagar airport has caused schedule changes in some months. Confirm your flight with the airline.
  3. Train option. A Vande Bharat service now runs between Jammu and Srinagar. It can be a comfortable way to reach the valley and sometimes cheaper than a last-minute flight. Check the current timetable.
  4. Permits. For Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, Indian travellers do not usually need a special permit. For border areas like Gurez, Keran or Bangus, you may need permission, and rules change by season.
  5. ID. Always carry a government photo ID. You will need it at hotels and checkpoints.
  6. Mobile network. Prepaid SIM cards from outside the state do not work. Carry a postpaid connection.
  7. Cash. Keep some with you, because cards and UPI can fail in small places.

Mistakes People Make With Timing

  • Expecting snow in the wrong month. Real snow in Gulmarg is a December to February thing. Do not go in May and expect it.
  • Going to the tulip garden too late. If you arrive in May, the best bloom is over.
  • Ignoring the crowd. Peak months are busy. Book hotels and houseboats early.
  • Ignoring weather in winter. Always keep a buffer day.
  • Choosing only by weather. Think about what you want to see, not just the temperature.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Five to six days cover Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam at a comfortable pace. Add Sonamarg if you have seven days. If you want to include offbeat valleys or go slow, plan eight to ten days.

Do not push four places into three days. Kashmir roads are slow, and you will spend more time in the car than at the places.

Want a Trip That Matches Your Season?

Picking the month is half the work. The other half is the route, the hotels and the pace. A winter trip needs buffer days, a spring trip needs early bookings, and an autumn trip needs the right stays for the best light.

If you want all of that handled for you, check our Kashmir tour package. Each plan is built around the season, with hotels, cabs and sightseeing already sorted, so you only have to enjoy the trip.
